With its headquarters in Ferguson, Missouri, Emerson Electric Co. is an American multinational company in the business of manufacturing and providing engineering services for different markets. Founded by John Wesley Emerson in 1890, the company was formerly known as Emerson Electric Manufacturing Co. Through Charles and Alexander Meston’s patent, the company’s first product was launched in 1892 and became the first to manufacture and sell electric fans in the US. When Herbert L. Parker took over John Emerson’s controlling interest in 1897, the company continued to expand its product range and was recognized for its quality products. Their electric motors were adapted and used in the development of sewing machines, dental equipment, and power tools. During WWII, Emerson was recognized for being the largest manufacturer of airplane armament under Stuart Symington’s leadership. In 1954, under the leadership of W.R. Buck, the company started to diversify through acquisitions. Emerson had also acquired United States Electrical Manufacturing Company, including its US Motors division in 1962; InSinkErator was also acquired in 1968. By 1973, the company’s growth in sales had already tripled. Under the leadership of Charles F. Knight, continued product and technology developments were done, more acquisitions and joint ventures which also helped boost the company’s growth internationally. He was succeeded by David Farr who remained as CEO until 2021. In 2010, Emerson sold US Motors to Nidec Motor Corp. and in 2016, Emerson Network Power business unit was acquired by Platinum Equity and rebranded it as Vertiv. One of its most recent acquisitions is when they acquired American Governor Company in 2020, aiming to increase their presence in the hydropower controls systems market. Emerson Electric Co. is publicly traded and listed in the New York Stock Exchange.
