Before it changed its name to Lumen Technologies, Inc. in 2020, CenturyLink, Inc. was recognized as one of the largest American telecommunications companies. Many people know it as a provider of internet, fiber, voice, phone, and TV services. Today, it also offers cloud solutions, security, and managed services. The telecommunication company’s roots go back to 1930 when Oak Ridge Telephone Company. F.E. Hogan, Sr., the owner, sold the Louisiana-based company to William Clarke and Marie Williams. Williams passed down the company to Clarke McRae Williams as a wedding gift 16 years later, making it a family-oriented firm. By 1967, the company served three states with 10,000 access lines. It became Central Telephone and Electronics in the same year. After four years, the company underwent another rebranding as Century Telephone Enterprises, Inc. Over the years, it acquired other telecommunications companies, including Central Telephone Company of Ohio, in 1992. This acquisition added 20% to Century’s access line total and expanded its reach. The firm’s 2003 acquisitions are also critical because they drove the company into the fiber optic network industry. In 2010, CenturyLink became the third-largest telecommunications company in the US, thanks to its procurement of Qwest. The company underwent another name change in 2020, swapping CenturyLink, Inc. out for Lumen Technologies, Inc. The brand’s best-known products lie in its small business and residential services. It provides telephone service, fiber optic internet, and direct broadcast satellite TV. Lumen Technologies, Inc. trades in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) using the ticker symbol LUMN. Until the rebrand, the company held the ticker symbol CTL for Century Telephone since it traded on the NYSE in 1978. In 2021, Lumen announced that it’d sell its assets in 20 states to Apollo Global management. Lumen will retain operations in 16 states.
