Dell is an American organisation that develops, sells, maintains, and supports computers and related services and products under the ownership of Dell Technologies, its parent company. The company provides PCs, servers, network switches, data storage devices, software, HDTVs, computer peripherals, cameras, printers, and electronics developed by other manufacturers. The company’s innovations in electronic commerce, supply chain management, and direct-sales model are vital to its popularity. Michael Dell founded Dell Computer Corporation and carried on business as PCs limited in 1984 while being a student at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1985, the company developed the first computer having its design, the “Turbo PC”, comprising an Intel 8088-compatible processor operating at a speed of 8 MHz. The early company advertised the computers in national computer magazines to reach and sell to consumers directly, subsequently custom-assembling each ordered unit to fit customer options. The company became Dell Computer Corporation and began its global expansion after dropping the PCs Limited name in 1987 because the owners believed the new name better reflected its presence in the business market. In 2013, the corporation announced that it had completed a USD 24.4 billion leveraged buyout agreement, consequently having it delist its shares from the NASDAQ and Hong Kong Stock Exchange, taking it private. Before the buyout, the company was publicly-traded at Nasdaq as DELL and a component of the NASDAQ-100 and S&P 500. Subsequently, the new private company acquired EMC Corporation in a deal valued at USD 67 billion, having Dell take over EMC’s 81% interest in the virtualisation and cloud-computing company VMWare. Other recent acquisitions by the company include StatSoft in 2014, Credant Technologies, Quest Software, and Gale Technologies in 2012.
