Based in Alabama, Digium is a communication technology company in the business of providing hardware and software products. Started in 1999, a Computer Engineering student and founder of Linux Support Services, Mark Spencer – initially created Asterisk due to how expensive buying PBX is. With his knowledge in coding, he created an open-source software project which had the ability to turn a personal computer into a communications server or Voice over IP (VoIP) phone system. The company’s name “Asterisk” was derived from the programming wildcard and star phone key symbol. The company also started to shift away from Linux support having started Asterisk. With this, Linux Support Services then changed its name in 2001 and is now known as Digium. Having developed Asterisk, this became an opportunity for the company to enter the telecom market and bring a different approach with its cost-saving and open-source features. Switchvox, a Unified Communications system powered by Asterisk, is the VoIP-based communications solution that the company offers. This made the brand be seen as a threat having been the only newbie in a multibillion-dollar phone equipment business competing with telco giants like, Cisco and Avaya. Digium continues to be used by developers in over 170 countries and is run on approximately 1MM servers. The company also offers B2B communication products which included Digium Cloud Services. Talks of an acquisition was announced by Sangoma on August of 2018. It was finalized and Digium was acquired for $28 million by Sangoma Technologies Corporation in September of 2018.

With such a rich history, it’s no wonder the company has so many products out there, from new to used. Finding the right documentation can be difficult, especially in the English language. This is the reason why we opened up a section dedicated to Digium User Manuals, where you can view or download each PDF.
