Mitel Networks Corporation is a Canadian Telecommunications organization focusing on Voice-over-IP (VoIP) products. It is headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, and provides communications platforms like call centers, cloud solutions, and unified communication. Furthermore, the organization sells session border controllers, collaboration applications, and Endpoints. Terry Mathews and Michael Cowpland started Mitel Networks in 1973 to produce telephony tone receiver products. The success of these products enabled the firm to extend its interest in the telecommunications industry. The emergence of the microprocessor and software technology in the 1970s prompted the company to design telecom switches. The firm unveiled the SX200 PBX in 1975, launching its success in the sector. As a result of the increased revenue, Mitel grew at over 100% per annum for several years and reached annual revenue of $100 million by 1981. The organization entered the semiconductor field by acquiring Siltex in 1975 and started manufacturing mixed-signal and thick film hybrid devices to expand its portfolio. In 2001, the company was acquired by Mathews for $230 million and rebranded to Mitel Networks by starting a family of PBXs based on the internet standards for VoIP. In 2013, Mitel Networks unveiled the acquisition of one of its chief suppliers, prairieFyre Software, Inc., an international provider of workforce optimization software and services as well as business analytics. This strategic move aimed to strengthen Mitel Networks’ position in the developing contact center market and coincided with the increasing influence of customer-facing contact center applications. The corporation became publicly traded in 2010 and is listed on the NASDAQ with the trading symbol MITL.
