NEC provides telecommunications equipment, servers, supercomputers, software, consumer electronics, cloud computing services, and artificial satellites. Kunihiko Iwadare established NEC in 1899 before it grew into a worldwide company. Its first name was Nippon Electric Limited Partnership, reflecting the connection between the Western Electric Company of Illinois (WE) and Japanese inventors like Takeshiro Maeda. The company is labeled as the first Japanese joint venture with foreign capital. The company’s first products and services involved the sales and maintenance of telephones and switches. From its establishment to 1907, telephone subscribers in Japan rose to over 95,000, thanks to NEC. In 1924, NEC began to produce radio and transmitting devices. However, in 1941, NEC’s ownership went to Sumitomo and became Sumitomo Communication Industries. The end of WWII saw Sumitomo Communication losing its plants, therefore returning to the name Nippon Electric Company after. In 1950, business resumed with NEC producing transistors. Then, it entered the computer industry in 1960, followed by researched integrated circuits six years later. NEC also merged and worked with other companies. A notable example is its acquisition of Packard Bell in 1995, which allowed the company to produce desktop PCs, one of its most successful ventures. By 2003, NEC took up 20.8% of the market share in the Japanese PC market. Its market share grew to 23.6% a decade later, making it the most prominent PC server manufacturer in Japan. Since 2000, NEC has traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TYO) with the ticker symbol 6701. It was also formerly listed on the Nasdaq and London Stock Exchange.

With such a rich history, it’s no wonder the company has so many products out there, from new to used. Finding the right documentation can be difficult, especially in the English language.
